An Introduction to Mediation

A half day course introducing Common Ground's mediation service and its potential applications in dealing with antisocial behaviour and conflict in east London.

Course Aims:

To introduce and define mediation
To look at conflict and antisocial behaviour suitable for mediation
To understand the mediation process
To establish procedures for receiving referrals

Conflict Awareness

A half day course which examines conflict and where it comes from as well as examining our personal responses to conflict and listening skills that can be used to begin to deal with conflict

To examine and practice positive responses to conflict
To introduce foundational mediation skills

An Introduction to Conflict Resolution

A half day course which unpacks the feelings and needs that lie beneath conflict and begins to use listening skills to develop conflict resolution techiniques

Course Aims:

To understand feelings and needs in relation to conflict
To build listening skills
To practice adapting communication towards conflict resolution

Listening Skills

A half day course introducing active listening and building the basic skills that help us listen in a way that helps us act and ensures that we hear the needs and feelings and not simply the problems of the people we are listening to.

To develop active listening skills
To learn what makes a good listener and to practice positive listening skills

Assertiveness

A half day course introducing the idea of assertiveness and helping us to practice it in our work and lives. What enables us to have our needs met and assert ourselves without aggression? How can we learn to say what we need clearly firmly and respectfully.

Define and understand assertiveness
Practice being assertive
Find strategies to help us to assert ourselves

Cultural Awareness

A half day course enabling us to look at the context in which we operate, build our understanding of the nature of discrimination, our approaches towards our own prejudice and learn about other people's experience

Course Aims:

To identify our own prejudices and to learn strategies for dealing with them
To learn about other peoples' experience
To develop strategies for building a respectful working environment

Personal safety

A half day course looking at how to stay safe whilst working in difficult contexts with people who may be angry and aggressive. The course offers an introduction to assessing risk of violence and aggression and some strategies for making your working practice safer.

To gain a realistic idea of risk and the approaches we can take to staying safe
To examine personal safety and current best practice
